George SERGEANT

1Birth Details. "In the Census of 2nd Apr 1871, George's age is shown as 9 years. Also, he wasn't recorded in the 7th Apr 1861 Census. So this would put his birth date between 8th Apr 1861 and 2nd Apr 1862.

However, in the Census of 3rd Apr 1881, George's age is shown as 20 years. Which would put his birth date between the 4th April 1860 and the 3rd Apr 1861 - this must be wrong as he  doesn't appear in the 1861 Census on 8th Apr 1861.

The GRO Birth Index shows a only one possible entry for George Sergeant in Blackburn.

Quarter:     Year:      District:         County:            Vol:     Page:
June          1862      Blackburn     Lancashire       8e       337

So it seems reasonable to suggest a birthdate of about April 1862.

Since Mary Ann was recorded as a Widow in the 8th Apr 1861 Census (her husband William having died abt May 1859), George, like Susanna, must have a different father.

Mary Ann married George Yates in 1873, so it seems possible, perhaps probable, he was the father of George and Susanna.

It is unlikely that a father's name would be stated on his birth certificate (Susanna's didn't) but may be there is on his marriage certificate, since his mother had re-married by then.

It would be interesting to study George Yates's past - where was he in 1861 and 1871? was he married to someone else up until 1873?."
