2Obituary, Jackson County - Obits from the Altus Times, 27 Mar 2002. "John E. Crabtree, 78, died Friday. Services were held Monday at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Altus with Peoples Funeral Home of Lone Wolf in charge of arrangements. A private graveside service was held at the Altus City Cemetery. Brother Boyd Whitehead officiated. He was born Feb. 9, 1924 at Oklahoma City to John E. Crabtree, Sr. and Bessie Blunderfield Crabtree. He grew up in Oklahoma City and San Bernardino, Calif. He graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1942. He served in Army Air Corp during World War II. He was flight engineer instructor for the B-17. He graduated from Valley College in San Bernardino with a degree in business management. He worked as a medical equipment superintendent at San Bernardino County Medical Center, over seeing the operation of advanced hospital machinery including the iron lung. He retired after 25 years in 1979. He married Jerry Smith on Dec. 23, 1946 in Oklahoma City. They had three children. He was an active member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Altus, serving in the intercessory prayer ministry. He was an active member of the Tuesday Morning Interdenominational Men's Bible Study in Altus. For six years, he volunteered at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital in the snack bar. He enjoyed traveling, making handmade miniature covered wagons to scale and reading. He read the Bible through in several versions more than ten times. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. He is survived by his wife Jerry of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Becky Crabtree of Portland, Ore.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Dennis Wattier of Caldwell, Idaho and Sandy and Carl Covey of Altus; grandchildren, Joe Covey of Altus, Scott and wife Shaundra Covey of Stillwater, Denny and wife Nikki Wattier of Caldwell, Idaho, Shalah and husband Rob Ducker of Richland, Washington, Wyatt and wife Dee Crabtree of Apex, N.C., John and wife Kerri Wattier of Boise, Idaho; nine great-grandchildren, Robert, Ashley, Joshua and Alec Ducker, Rusty and Emily, Chase Dana Wattier and Dalton Crabtree."
