Thomas is mentioned in the will of his father which was signed on the 4th June 1814.

In 1812, Thomas began working as a Ships Steward for th Honourable East India Company and made his first voyage on the 2nd August aboard the 600 Ton 'Alexander' between England and India. He then served on various ships, mainly to China, and even survived a  shipwreck in 1818 when the 'Cabalva' struck a reef (Cargados Shoals) about 250 miles NW of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

In May 1825, there is an entry in The Fleet Prison Discharge Book, for the release of Thomas Blunderfield. An image of this entry can be viewed in the Document Archive in Folder B0714.

On the 13th May 1829, Mary as the widow of a Ship's Steward is granted by the East India Company a pension of £8 during her widowhood, each of her 5 children were granted £3 each until they reached a prescribed age. See scrapbook for image.

In 1843, Mary, aged 63, a widow of Thomas Blunderfield of All Saints, Poplar, petitioned Trinity House. See scrapbook for image.

To receive a Trinity House pension or enter an almshouse, one had to petition the Corporation. Petitions survive from 1787-1854.

They had the following children.

Thomas BLUNDERFIELD-B0652 was born on 18 Mar 1811 in Loddon, Norfolk. He was christened 1 on 21 Mar 1811 in Holy Trinity, Loddon, Norfolk. He died 2 on 09 Aug 1828 in Bombay, India from Cholera. He was buried 3 on 10 Aug 1828 in Bombay, India.

Like his father, Thomas also took up a sea-going career with the Honourable East India Company. In the journal of the HEIC Ship Winchelsea, his father is listed as Ship’s Steward and Thomas Blunderfield Jnr is listed as Boatswains Servant. He would have been 15 years and 4 months old when this 12 month voyage to India began on the 18 July 1826. It was not unusual for boys of 11 or 12 to be sent to sea. The Marine Society was a charitable institution which trained and arranged placements on ships for young boys. These were generally from poor families and was seen as a way of improving their prospects. Boys were paid 10s per month.

Father and son are again listed together for their next voyage. A longer one to India and China this time, aboard the HEIC Ship Abercrombie Robinson, which left the Thames on the 21 February 1828. His father held his usual position of Ship's Steward, whilst Thomas Jnr was employed as a servant to the ships carpenter.  The ship stayed several weeks in Bombay during the outward leg and unfortunately Thomas Jnr became infected with Cholera and died on the 9th August 1828. His body was taken ashore for burial on the 10th, just a few hours before the ship sailed for China.

Charles Middleton BLUNDERFIELD-B0644 was born on 17 Oct 1819 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was christened on 01 Nov 1819 in the Church of Saint Nicholas in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Curiously the IGI shows a baptism of Charles Middleton on the same date in Earsdon by North Shields, Northumberland !

Like his father and older brothers, Charles also joined the Merchant Navy. His records show that he was born on the 17th October 1819 and that he first went to sea in 1834 as an apprentice aged 15 years. His last reported voyage was in 1848.

No British death registration or Census records can be found, so perhaps he emigrated.
F viii Ann BLUNDERFIELD-B0645 was born on 05 Feb 1825. She died on 27 Jan 1908.

William Barnabas BRISTOW-B0647 was born about Nov 1821 in Blundeston, Suffolk. He was christened 1 on 25 Nov 1821 in Blundeston, Suffolk. He died 2 on 04 Jul 1913 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan, USA. William was counted in a census on 08 Apr 1861 in 6, Howard Street, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 39 years, working as a Ship's Carpenter. He was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in 6, Howard Street, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 49 years, working as a Ship's Carpenter. He was counted in a census on 08 Jun 1900 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan, USA. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 78 years, working as a Farmer.

William, Ann and at least one of their sons, moved to the USA between 1871 and 1880.

Ann BLUNDERFIELD [Parents]-B0645 was born on 05 Feb 1825 in Poplar, Middlesex. She was christened 1, 2 in 19 Apr 1829 and 16 Oct 1831. She died 3 on 27 Jan 1908 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan, USA. She was buried on 30 Jan 1908. Ann married 4 William Barnabas BRISTOW-B0647 on 28 Oct 1854 in Saint Mary, Bromley St Leonard, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex.

Ann was counted in a census on 07 Jun 1841 in Ashton Street, Tower Hamlets, London, Middlesex. She was described as aged 15 years. She was counted in a census on 10 Jun 1880 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan, USA. She was described as Wife, aged 50 years. She was counted in a census on 08 Jun 1900 in Brownstown, Wayne, Michigan, USA. She was described as Wife, aged 75 years. In this census, Ann states that she has given birth to 6 children of which only 1 was still living.

There is some confusion over the baptism of Ann. There are two records of baptisms of Ann to Thomas (a Mariner) and Mary in the Poplar district of London.
The first record shows Ann being baptised on the 29th Apr 1829 (unfortunately no birth date is shown).
The second record shows a baptism on the 31st Oct 1831. This would normally suggest that the first Ann had died but this second baptism record gives a birth date of 5th Feb 1825, also Ann's father Thomas had died at sea on the 12 Feb 1829.. In the 1851 census, Ann gives her age as 24 (31 Mar 1826 to 30 Mar 1827)

See scrapbook for images of the two baptism records.
