MISCELLANEOUS:
Extract from " The Isle of Wight - an Illustrated History" by Jack and Johanna Jones, 1987 (p120).

Newport was the centre of the Chartist movement in the Island, with a second branch at Cowes and a small group at Ventnor. The Island Chartists were unusual in being mainly small traders rather than operatives. Barnabus Urry, millwright and founder, was the chairman and Phillip Brannon, son of the engraver, was an active missionary. He started a Ragged School in Newport and taught there himself. Mr Self, a baker in Crocker Street, was the vigorous secretary in 1842 when the Island members sent £6-18-0 (£6.90) to the Chartist Political Victims and Defence Fund, following the riots in the north earlier that year. The fear of a Chartist uprising in 1848 was so great that rumours spread that a large party had landed in the Island to capture the Queen. They were, in fact, an innocent group of Oddfellows on a day trip from the mainland!.

OCCUPATIONS:
