William Barker BLUNDERFIELD [Parents]-B0658 was born on 26 Feb 1787 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He was baptized on 27 Feb 1787 in St Nicholas's, Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk. He died in Mar 1860 in Hickling, Norfolk. He was buried on 14 Mar 1860 in St Mary's Church, Hickling, Norfolk. William married Susan.

William was counted in a census on 06 Jun 1841 in Stalham, Norfolk. He was described as a Schoolmaster aged 45 to 49 years. He was counted in a census on 30 Mar 1851 in The Green, Hickling, Norfolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 63 years, working as a Schoolmaster.

William's mother died soon after his birth and his father died when he was only 8 years old. I wonder who brought him up? He must have had a good education to eventually become a schoolmaster.

In 1830, he is recorded as a Schoolmaster living in Sutton, Norfolk
In 1841, he is recorded as a Schoolmaster living in Stalham, Norfolk
In 1851, he is recorded as a Schoolmaster living in Hickling, Norfolk

These villages are all quite close together, within 2 or 3 miles. Perhaps one school served all three.

Susan was born about 1797 in Lynn, Norfolk. She died in Aug 1857 in Hickling, Norfolk. She was buried on 26 Aug 1857 in St Mary's Church, Hickling, Norfolk. Susan married William Barker BLUNDERFIELD-B0658.

Susan's death registration staes her age as 71 years, which would put her year of birth around 1786, which is quite a variance from those calculated from the Censuses (1841: 45-49, so yob 1792-1797) (1851: 53, so yob 1798)

Notes from conversations with both Alice Hesketh (nee Jackson - J0209) and Florence Barton (nee Jackson - J0206)

'Bill' did not move to Blackburn with the family around 1922/3, he was brought up by his grandparents (John Henry and Grace Ward) at 20, Carrfield Road and attended Sheffield Grammar School. He joined the Army (1st Bn. East Lancashire Regiment) as a 'boy soldier' (presumably around 1929) but soon after joining ran away - the police visited 50 Ash Street to take him back. He must have overcome his concerns, as he looks very happy in the picture taken in Shanghai in 1932 and stayed in the Army until after the war. Florence says that he met his wife Margaret (Peggy) whilst stationed in Belfast (the regiment was there from 1935 until about Sep 1939 - see the list of tours below).

Florence remembers being taken on a visit to Belfast, by Bill and Peggy, before she left school in Jul 1940.

Florence says that Bill and Peggy lived in Hickory Street, Blackburn for a  while (they are not listed in the 35, 37, 46, 49, 51 or 52 electoral registers - no registers during the War), so it may have been for one of the short periods when Bill's regiment was stationed in Lancashire

Alice says that when Bill was in the army and stationed in Lancashire, he would occasionally visit them in Blackburn (one time turning up in a tank!) but the visits were always during the day and when Isaiah was out. Was there bad feeling between Bill and Isaiah?

From at least Sep 1952 until Jul 1961, Bill, his wife 'Peggy' and their children lived at 9, Combermere Terrace, Birkenhead. I remember going to visit them with my parents a couple of times in the late 1950's (particularly going through the Mersey Tunnel) and recall playing out and climbing over walls with one of the boys, probably Ernest. I remember Uncle Bill as a very jolly person.

In September 1952, Bill was working as a Motor Mechanic at a Garage.
In July 1961, he was working as a Lorry Driver for a Haulage Contractor.
