In October 1942 he was moved to Tarsoa and Tamuan POW Camps in Thailand. These camps were associated with the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway, where conditions were extremely poor. In June 1944 he was taken by ship to Omoto Labour Camp in Japan. From where he was eventually liberated on the 9th of September 1945.

His brother-in-law, Hugh Arthur Rackham was a Sergeant in the same battalion and experienced the same movements.

Charles's Wife Harriet, was not with him when the 1881 census was taken. This was perhaps the first indication that they had separated. When the 1891 census was taken, Charles is living with another woman called Emma (Emma Bird), who is recorded as his wife and has had two children with him. However, they were not married.

It is curious that when Harriet dies in Jan 1901, she is described in the Probate Index as the wife of Charles Rackham and her estate of £142 passes to Charles. Within weeks of Harriet's death, Charles and Emma marry in Great Yarmouth.
