Donald Charles STEWARD [scrapbook]-S0317 was born on 14 Aug 1907 in Sunningdale, Berkshire. He died on 04 May 1981 in New Buckenham, Norfolk. Donald married Ida Christine RACKHAM-R0324 on 29 Nov 1934 in Wymondham, Norfolk.

Donald was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1911 in Morestead Grange, Winchester, Hampshire. He was described as Son aged 3 years.

During WW2, Donald served as a Captain in the 4th Bn. of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. They were stationed in Singapore when the Japanese took control. Along with many other British servicemen there, he was captured on the 15th of February 1942 and initially taken to Changi prison in Singapore. In October 1942 he was moved to Tarsoa and Tamuan POW Camps in Thailand. These camps were associated with the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway, where conditions were extremely poor. In June 1944 he was taken by ship to Omoto Labour Camp in Japan. From where he was eventually liberated on the 9th of September 1945.

His brother-in-law, Hugh Arthur Rackham was a Sergeant in the same battalion and experienced the same movements.

Ida Christine RACKHAM [Parents] [scrapbook] 1-R0324 was born 2 on 29 May 1907 in Hethel, Norfolk. She was christened on 30 Jun 1907 in All Saints Church, Hethel, Norfolk. Arthur Hugh RACKHAM [Parents] 1-R0326 was born on 13 Jan 1913 in Hethel, Norfolk. He was christened on 09 Feb 1913 in All Saints Church, Hethel, Norfolk. He died on 07 May 2002 in Norwich, Norfolk. Arthur married Mary E BECK-B03GN about Nov 1949 in Norwich Outer (RD), Norfolk.

Arthur was counted in a census on 19 Jun 1921 in Hethel, Norfolk. He was described as Son, aged 8 years and 5 months, attending school full-time.

His name at birth was registered, and he was baptised as Arthur Hugh. This order of names was again used by his family when they completed the Census form in 1921. However, during his military service and when he married in 1949, he used the form Hugh Arthur.

During WW2, Hugh served as a Sergeant in the 4th Bn. of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. They were stationed in Singapore when the Japanese took control. Along with many other British servicemen there, he was captured on the 15th of February 1942 and initially taken to Changi prison in Singapore. In October 1942 he was moved to Tarsoa  POW Camp in Thailand. These camps were associated with the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway, where conditions were extremely poor. In June 1944 he was taken by ship to Sendai Labour Camp in Japan. From where he was eventually liberated on the 14th of August 1945.

His brother-in-law, Donald Charles Steward was a Captain in the same battalion and experienced largely the same movements.

His death was registered as Arthur Hugh.

Mary E BECK-B03GN was born on 18 Jan 1923 in Mitford (RD), NFK. She died in ?. Mary married Arthur Hugh RACKHAM-R0326 about Nov 1949 in Norwich Outer (RD), Norfolk.

When the National Register was compiled on the 29th of September 1939, Mary was living at Hill House, Mill Road, Depwade, Norfolk. She was described as unmarried and carrying out unpaid domestic duties. Date of birth was recorded as the 18th of January 1923.

Other marriages:
BIRD, Emma

Charles's Wife Harriet, was not with him when the 1881 census was taken. This was perhaps the first indication that they had separated. When the 1891 census was taken, Charles is living with another woman called Emma (Emma Bird), who is recorded as his wife and has had two children with him. However, they were not married.

It is curious that when Harriet dies in Jan 1901, she is described in the Probate Index as the wife of Charles Rackham and her estate of £142 passes to Charles. Within weeks of Harriet's death, Charles and Emma marry in Great Yarmouth.

Harriet Ann BETTS-B05ER was born about Oct 1848 in Scottow, Norfolk. She was baptized on 01 Nov 1848 in All Saints Church, Scottow, Norfolk. She died on 16 Jan 1901 in Heigham Hall, Heigham, Norfolk. Harriet married Charles RACKHAM-R0555 on 27 Nov 1872 in Scottow, Norfolk.

Charles Edward RACKHAM [scrapbook]-R0433 was born 1 about Feb 1878 in Wacton, Norfolk. He was christened on 06 Jul 1879 in All Saints Church, Wacton, Norfolk. He died in Apr 1945 in Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand from killed in WW1. He was buried on 26 Apr 1945 in Purewa Cemetery, Aucland, New Zealand.

He was described as Boarder aged 13 years and a Scholar at Wangford Grammar School. He was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 117, Methuen Terrace, Gorleston, Norfolk. He was described as Boarder, unmarried, aged 23 years, working as an Insurance Agent.

It is curious that his baptism records his mother's name as Mary not Harriet.

For a time it was thought that this Charles Edward Rackham became a Sergeant in the Army Service Corps (M.T.) and drowned at sea off Egypt on the 29 May 1918. However, the age on his Army Attestation Form, in January 1915, was stated as 40yr 5mth, which would put his date of birth around Aug 1874. He also gave his place of birth as Old Catton in Norwich. There is a Charles Edward Rackham baptised in Catton on the 24 Oct 1870, which would put him even older (he may have knocked a few years off his age in order to join up).

A better match was a Charles Edward Rackham who emigrated to New Zealand in 1902 at the age of 24. He did travel to Canada in 1897 but must have returned to England, as he appears back in Norfolk in the 1901 Census. He became a Farmer, initially in Hawke's Bay and then Tauranga, Bay of Plenty.

Charles emigrated about a year after his mother died and a couple of months before his father died. Was he estranged from his father because of the circumstances surrounding the second wife Emma?

It is not clear what became of Frederick Ernest. He does not appear with his parents in the US1900 Census. One researcher thought he had died around 1893 before the family moved to the USA but there is no UK death record. Perhaps he died in the USA.
