1Death Details. "In Census taken on the 7th April 1861, William's Wife Mary Ann was recorded as a Widow.
In the same Census , John Charles Sergeant was shown as aged 14 months which would put his birthdate as between 8th Jan and 7th Feb 1860, meaning that William must have been alive in April 1859 for the conception
(assuming he was the father!).
A similar analysis of the birth range of George Sergeant in the 1871 and 1881 Census, suggests that William must have been alive from at least 8th July 1860 - assuming the ages are stated correctly and he is the father.
This would put the death of William between the 8th July 1860 and the 6th April 1861.
A search of the GRO Death Index, shows the following deaths for a William Sergeant in Lancashire between 1859 and 1861:

The June 1859 in Blackburn seems to be the most likely, although, as a Painter and Decorator he could have been working in Preston when he died but if so wouldn't his wife have still registered the death in Blackburn?
