Alfred was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 100, Oxford Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. He was described as Son aged 4 years. He was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 201, Higher Audley Street, Blackburn. He was described as Son aged 14 years. Loom tenter in Cotton Mill. Strange to be described as a Boarder when he was the brother of the Head of Household.

Before the  fist world war, Alfred had been in the 3rd Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment (no 16 3274) for a time. He became a weaver afterwards.

Probably answering Kitchener's call to form a new army in August 1914, Alfred joined the queues and enlisted in Blackburn on the 9th September1914 when he was given the service number G/2383. He was assigned to the newly formed (Note 1) 7th Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment and soon found himself on one of the special trains to Purfleet in Essex, where the new recruits were equipped and began their training. Thousands of volunteers were arriving and there was insufficient accommodation at the time, so many had to sleep in tents through that first winter.

The 7th Bn. moved to Colchester in April 1915 and then on to Salisbury Plain in May. On the 25 July 1915, Alfred and his pals were posted to France where they landed in Le Havre on the 27th July 1915.
The R.W.K.’s 7th Bn. took part in the 1st July 1916 attack on the Somme, as part of the 18th Division, and was among that terrible day’s success stories, occupying enemy trenches at Montauban. Alfred was wounded on the 27th July and taken to a Field Hospital for treatment. He was in hospital almost 12 weeks before being moved to a rest camp on the 18th October. He spent only 5 days at the rest camp before rejoining his comrades in the trenches on the 23rd October. Whilst Alfred was in hospital, his Battalion saw hard fighting in the battle for the Schwaben Redoubt (a mass of gun emplacements, trenches and tunnels) by all accounts, the fighting here was simply dreadful but it was captured by the 14th October 1916.

Less than 3 weeks after returning to the trenches, Alfred was killed in action on the 8th November 1916.  No particular action has been identified and no memorial has yet been found for Alfred.

Notes:
(1) The 7th (Service) Battalion was formed at Maidstone on 5 September 1914 as part of K2 and attached to 55th Brigade in 18th (Eastern) Division.

It seems as though William was probably an illegitimate child, as both the baptism and burial records refer only to the mother Agnes Sergeant.

The following notes give some idea of what Blackpool was like when William was working as a Plasterer at the Clifton Arms Hotel, Clifton Square in  Layton with Warbreck, at the time of the 1861 Census.

The mid-Victorian Resort

Even by the beginning of the 1860s, there were still very few forms of entertainment to be found in Blackpool. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, perched on the crumbling cliffs to the north of the town, had begun to provide refreshments, music and dancing. But it reached its zenith later in the century, by which time it was threatened by erosion of the cliffs.  What remained of the building was demolished in 1908.

Blackpool got its first pier, the North Pier, designed by Eugenius Birch and built of cast iron on screwed piles, in 1863 - it soon became an exclusive promenade for “quality” visitors and the pier is now a Listed Building.

In 1867 the Prince of Wales Arcade opened (now the site of the Tower), and the following year saw the Talbot Road Assembly Rooms and Theatre Royal (Yates’s Wine Lodge and Addison’s night club) and the South Jetty added to the list of attractions. The last, now the Central Pier, was not well patronised until 1870 when Robert Bickerstaffe introduced open-air dancing for the “working classes” - in the same year a new Promenade, with a sloping sea wall, was completed from South Shore to Claremont Park (just north of the Metropole hotel).

Elizabeth HARGREAVES-H0639 # was born about 1800 in Blackburn, Lancashire. She died about Nov 1882 in Blackburn, Lancashire. Elizabeth married 1 William SERGEANT-S0601 # on 08 May 1820 in Church of St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire.
