She then took the Civil Service Clerical Assistant Open Examination, which she passed and  started work as a Clerical Assistant with the Air Ministry in 1938, auditing RAF Officers accounts. She was evacuated with the Air Ministry to Stroud, Gloucestershire in 1940. Ethel was promoted to Clerical Officer while working at Stroud. Ethel returned to London in 1943, and left the Air Ministry on her marriage in 1947.

About 1967, Ethel started work again as a temporary part-time clerk with the Pearl Assurance Company in Holborn, but she
left after about 2 years to be with her sister who was dying of cancer.

In 1968/9 Ethel again passed a Clerical Assistant test to join British Telecom's Area Office in Bromley. She was promoted to
Clerical Officer about 6 months later after passing a further examination. She worked in the section dealing with unpaid accounts. Ethel resigned in January 1980 to be with her husband following his retirement.
