Thomas BASS-B0615 # was born about 1773. He died in Jun 1842 in Hythe, Kent. He was buried on 20 Jun 1842 in St Leonard's Church, Hythe, Kent. Thomas married Sarah.

Thomas was counted in a census on 06 Jun 1841 in High Street, Hythe, Kent. He was described as Agricultural Labourer aged 65 to 69 years. Not born in Kent.

Birthdate Analysis:
Age in 1841 Census was shown as 65 years, which gives a birthdate range of 7 Jun 1771 to 6 Jun 1776.
Age stated in St Leonard's Burial Register was 68 years, which gives a birthdate range of 16 Jun 1773 to 15 Jun 1774.
Age stated on Death Registration was 69 years, which gives a birthdate range of 16 Jun 1772 to 15 Jun 1773.

In the Parish Register for the Baptism of his son William in 1801, Thomas is described as a Private in the West Kent Militia. However, when his daughter Ann Elizabeth was baptised in 1803 there was no such comment, even though other fathers at the time were described as Soldiers. The Anglo-Spanish war began in 1796 and a Supplementary Militia Ballot took place in each Parish. Defence of the Channel Ports would have been a priority, so it wouldn't be that surprising that Thomas, if selected, would be sent to the Hythe area. In 1802, married men with children under 14 became exempt from the militia, which might explain why he was noted as a soldier in 1801 but not in 1803.

In the 1841 census, both Thomas and Sarah indicated that neither of them was born in Kent, which of course widens the scope of where they married. If he was born 1773, then the marriage could be between 1791 and 1801 (when their son William was baptised).

A search of available records in England during this period, found only two possible marriages (of course there could be others in Parishes not yet transcribed or indexed):

04 May 1795 in East Harling, Norfolk to Sarah Killingback by Banns (Both signed the register with a X). They had a daughter Ann, who was baptised in Norwich in Apr 1796. Can't find any further records in Norfolk for this couple or the child Ann.

03 Jun 1797 in Dover, Kent to Sarah Belsey by Licence. Sarah, Thomas and all three witnesses signed the register, so were educated. One of the witnesses was a Mary Bass, possibly a  sister? Further research into this marriage and family, shows that it can be discounted. His wife Sarah died in 1802 and Thomas married again in 1804, to Ann Allen. They continued to live in Dover. He died in 1844 and his Will shows that he was fairly wealthy.

Searches for a Thomas Bass born 1772 to 1774, have found 7 possibles.

None from Norfolk though. It looks as though Thomas and his children followed child naming conventions to some extent, so (C) father Abraham and (G) mother Abigail, would seem the most unlikely.

I will try to eliminate some by seeing if they survived or appear elsewhere but this is unlikely to provide enough evidence of Thomas's actual parents. The fact that he was a Private in the West Kent Militia may be the best line of enquiry - any records may give his place of birth, or the Parish from which he came (if by ballot).

In June 1842, Thomas was found dead in his bed. An Inquest was held and, after investigation, returned a verdict of 'Natural Death'. A very brief report appeared in the Kentish Gazette on the 28th of June (see folder B0615 in Document Archive).
