Jack, as he was usually called, was born with six fingers on one hand - a condition known as polydactyly.

Unlike his brother William, Jack did move to Blackburn with his parents in 1922/3. As the big brother, he often had to look after all of his younger sisters. In the mid 1930's, he walked from Blackburn to Birmingham looking for work. He found work as a mechanical engineer in the motor industry and settled in Birmingham where he met and then married Rose.

In 1939, Jack and Rose were living at 89, Bordesley Green in Birmingham. Jack was working a a fitter for a Mining Heavy Engineering Company. Rose was working as a Laundry Ironer.

During WWII, he was excused military service because of his engineering skills. He was building colliery winders at one time but was later approached and seconded, as a civilian (but with an equivalent rank of Chief Petty Officer)  to the War Office. He was sent to Ceylon where he worked in the Trincomalee dockyards repairing and maintaining Naval and Cargo Vessels as well as the heavy equipment used to build and maintain airfields..
