Since his mother Mary Ann was recorded as a Widow in the 8th Apr 1861 Census (her husband William having died abt May 1859), George, like Susanna, must have a different father.

There was no father named in the Baptism register.

When George married in 1881, he gave the name of his father as 'William Preston Sergeant' - perhaps he was brought up in the belief that William was his father

Mary Ann married George Yates in 1873, so it seems possible, perhaps probable, he was the father of George (named after him) and also Susanna.

It would be interesting to study George Yates's past - where was he in 1861 and 1871? was he married to someone else up until 1873?
