Notes from conversations with both Alice Hesketh (nee Jackson - J0209) and Florence Barton (nee Jackson - J0206)

'Bill' did not move to Blackburn with the family around 1922/3, he was brought up by his grandparents (John Henry and Grace Ward) at 20, Carrfield Road and attended Sheffield Grammar School. He joined the Army (1st Bn. East Lancashire Regiment) as a 'boy soldier' (presumably around 1929) but soon after joining ran away - the police visited 50 Ash Street to take him back. He must have overcome his concerns, as he looks very happy in the picture taken in Shanghai in 1932 and stayed in the Army until after the war. Florence says that he met his wife Margaret (Peggy) whilst stationed in Belfast (the regiment was there from 1935 until about Sep 1939 - see the list of tours below).

Florence remembers being taken on a visit to Belfast, by Bill and Peggy, before she left school in Jul 1940.

Florence says that Bill and Peggy lived in Hickory Street, Blackburn for a  while (they are not listed in the 35, 37, 46, 49, 51 or 52 electoral registers - no registers during the War), so it may have been for one of the short periods when Bill's regiment was stationed in Lancashire

Alice says that when Bill was in the army and stationed in Lancashire, he would occasionally visit them in Blackburn (one time turning up in a tank!) but the visits were always during the day and when Isaiah was out. Was there bad feeling between Bill and Isaiah?

From at least Sep 1952 until Jul 1961, Bill, his wife 'Peggy' and their children lived at 9, Combermere Terrace, Birkenhead. I remember going to visit them with my parents a couple of times in the late 1950's (particularly going through the Mersey Tunnel) and recall playing out and climbing over walls with one of the boys, probably Ernest. I remember Uncle Bill as a very jolly person.

In September 1952, Bill was working as a Motor Mechanic at a Garage.
In July 1961, he was working as a Lorry Driver for a Haulage Contractor.

He subsequently married a Blackburn girl called Winifred Slater around Feb 1938 and they lived in the Audley district. Frank was also in the Army and is said to have shot himself in the arm with a pistol whilst drunk - the arm was amputated. He was known as the 'One Armed Gardener' at Roe Lee Park in Blackburn.

The age at death, the father's name and exact address, suggest that either the family changed the name from Isabel(la), which she was registered and baptised with, to Elizabeth by the time she died, or the parish clerk misheard/recorded the name incorrectly.

Curiously there are two baptism records for a James Eddleston, parents Henry and Margaret of Wensley Fold, one at St Pauls and the other at St Mary the Virgin. The birthdates are different but only a few weeks apart.

Baptism: 28 Apr 1861 St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
James Eddleston - [Child] of Henry Eddleston & Margaret
   Born: 28 Oct 1860
   Abode: Wensley Fold
   Occupation: Carder
   Baptised by: H. Wescoe Curate
   Register: Baptisms 1859 - 1864, Page 321, Entry 2559
   Source: LDS Film 1278805

Baptism: 24 Sep 1860 St Paul, Blackburn, Lancashire, England
James Eddleston - [Child] of Henry Eddleston & Margaret
   Born: 9 Sep 1860
   Abode: Wensley Fold
   Occupation: Carder
   Baptised by: H. W. Marychurch
   Register: Baptisms 1832 - 1877, Page 358, Entry 4500
   Source: LDS Film 1470927

There are no other Henry and Margaret Eddleston's living in that area of Blackburn, or with the same occupation, so one of these is incorrect.

The GRO Birth Indexes for 1860/61 only has the following entries:
James EDDLESTON Jan/Feb/Mar 1860 Blackburn 8e/336
James EDLESTON    Jul/Aug/Sep 1860 Blackburn 8e/311

The GRO Death Indexes for 1860/61 only has the following entry:
James EDLESTON    Jan/Feb/Mar 1860 Blackburn 8e/191

So the first one probably died and in any case is too early. The remaining Birth Index entry suggests that the 9 Sep 1860 birth date is correct but why, in the 1861 Census, is James's age is given as 5 months, which puts his date of birth between about 8th Oct 1860 and the 8th Nov 1860 (cf. 28 Oct 1860).

In the absence of any other evidence, the baptism which matches the 'official' GRO entry will be used.

Susannah was baptised on the 11th of June 1809 with her mother's surname (SMITH) because no father was named. The fact that she married the widower John Eddleston two weeks later, makes it highly likely that he was her father. She was brought up with the surname Eddleston.
