On the 7th of November 1901, just 2 days after his sixteenth birthday, George went to Preston and enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment for a term of 6 years. However, he lied about his age (said he was 17 years and 1 month). This was soon discovered and he was discharged a week later.

Charles's Wife Harriet, was not with him when the 1881 census was taken. This was perhaps the first indication that they had separated. When the 1891 census was taken, Charles is living with another woman called Emma (Emma Bird), who is recorded as his wife and has had two children with him. However, they were not married.

It is curious that when Harriet dies in Jan 1901, she is described in the Probate Index as the wife of Charles Rackham and her estate of £142 passes to Charles. Within weeks of Harriet's death, Charles and Emma marry in Great Yarmouth.
