On the 15th September 1908, Edward became a student at the  Lowestoft School of Science.

He was quick to enlist when war broke out in 1914, signing up on the 12th October 1914 into the Army Service Corps (M/323373). Perhaps due to his engineering skills, he was promoted to Lance Corporal within 2 months and sent to various armament factories and shipbuilders around the country (Glasgow, Barrow, Newcastle), where he worked as an electrical fitter. He was promoted to acting Corporal in May 1915 (this wasn't made substantive until September 1918). He was eventually posted overseas to Italy on the 9th January 1918, to join the 6th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment (part of the 48th Division). He left the forces on the 17th February 1919.

Edward farmed at 'Harleigh Farm' on Silverbow Road, about 10 miles N.E. of Rusape in Rhodesia. 'Harleigh' was the name of his parents house in Lowestoft.

The farm was the subject of major archaelogical excavations between 1958 and 1962, which uncovered building ruins from the Inyanga culture and is now a National Historical Monument.

On the 12th July 1960, Edward and Helen arrived in London, having travelled First Class aboard the Steamship 'Kenya'. They stayed at Lambert House in Kessingland before returning to Rhodesia on the 11th November 1960.
