John Henry and his wife Grace are shown in the Electoral Registers as living at 20, Carrfield Road, Sheffield in 1920 and 1924. However, by 1928 Grace had left (said to have 'run off' with the Coalman). In 1930 John Henry is still at that address but is joined by a Florence Taylor. They were no longer at that address in 1932.

In the 1939 register, John Henry was living at 17, Brickfields in Sheffield and working as a Steam Crane driver. The only other person at that address was an Emma Ward (b. 06 Jun 1875, so a similar age). They were both recorded as 'married'. In the 1939 register, Emma's surname was changed from Ward to Mead on the 2nd Apr 1947, which usually signifies a marriage (there is a marriage in 1Q1947 in Sheffield between Sarah E Ward and Samuel J Mead). There is a marriage in Wakefield in 3Q1936 between a John H Ward and Sarah Griffiths and one in Doncaster in 4Q1934 between a John Ward and Emma Evans - both places are around 25 miles from Sheffield.

Florence Barton (nee Jackson - J0206) remembered visiting John Henry Ward (her grandfather) in the the early 1950's. He was living with a woman who wasn't her grandmother. Florence couldn't remember where it was but thought it was in the Derby or Sheffield area.

She was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1911 in 3, Cross Gilpin Street, Sheffield, West Yorkshire. She was described as Wife, aged 36 years. Married for 17 years and given birth to 2 children, both still living. She was counted in a census on 19 Jun 1921 in 20, Carrfield Road, Upper Heeley, Sheffield. She was described as Wife, aged 44 years and 6 months, carrying out home duties.

MISCELLANEOUS:
In a conversation with Florence Barton (nee JACKSON-J0206) in Feb 2003, I was told that Grace left her husband and 'ran off' with the local Coalyard Owner!! She thought that Grace had a baby by him but, as an infant, it was crushed by a steam roller during a religious demonstration/march. Such an event must have been reported in the newspapers but with no idea of the date or surname, it would be a long slog to find it.

The Electoral Registers show that Grace was still living with John Henry in 1924 but was not there in 1928. Unfortunately the 1925-27 registers were not available at the time this was researched.

They had the following children.

  F i Florence Emma WARD-W0301 # was born on 06 Feb 1896. She died on 25 Dec 1979.

Other marriages:
KILLER, William

At the time of the 1871 Census (2 Apr 1871), Sarah Jane LAMB was living at 41, Coulsham Street, Lincoln and her future Husband, John Richard WARD, was living at number 6.

In the 1911 census, Sarah is recorded as having had 11 children in her present marriage, of which 4 died. I have found 9 for this marriage (of which 2 are known to have died) and 2 in her previous marriage. Perhaps they misunderstood the question.

They had the following children.

  M i
William Charles Robert WARD-W0403 was born 1 on 06 Dec 1872 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. He died 2 on 01 Mar 1893 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire from Accidental death. Hit by machinery at the Killer Bros quarry. He was buried 3 on 05 Mar 1893 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

William was admitted into Middleton by Wirksworth Infants School on 11 Dec 1876 (his age was recorded as 4yr 0m).

After leaving school, William worked as a Labourer at the Sawmill of Messrs' Killer Brothers at Hopton Wood, owned by his Stepfather William Killer. On the 11th of February 1893, William was working a night-shift and around midnight was struck by the connecting rod of the steam engine, which knocked him down and stunned him. He continued to work until his shift ended at 8.30am the next morning, later that day he went to Brassington to play football. He began to complain of a pain in the back of his head and started to have fits, he was attended by Dr Harvey throughout his illness but died at 5pm on the 1st of March.
M ii John Henry WARD-W0401 # was born on 12 Jun 1874. He died after 1950.

Richard Edward BATES [Parents] [scrapbook]-B0503 # was born about Aug 1839 in Dublin, Ireland. He was christened 1 on 19 Aug 1839 in St Nicholas' (Without), Dublin City, Ireland. Richard BATES was a Catholic and was born about Aug 1839 in Dublin. Although he was baptised with the middle name of Edward he doesn't seem to have used it during his life - the only other document where it appears is the Wirksworth Cemetery Register. On the 5th January 1861, at the age of 22, he enlisted in the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot at a Dublin Recruiting Office. He originally signed on for 10 years but made a career out of it and completed 30 Years and 15 days by the time he was discharged on the 19th Jan 1891. In his enlistment papers he gave his profession as a Shoemaker.

During his Army Service, he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.

In the 1891 Census, taken almost 3 months after he left the Army, he stated his occupation as a shoemaker, so perhaps he returned to this for a while. By 1901, and claiming to be 64 years old (actually 62), he stated his occupation as an Army Pensioner.

In 1907, Richard became the Licensee of the The Blacks Head pub in West End, Wirksworth. When he died, his son-in-law John McCreery took over the license.

Mary Anne WHELAN [Parents] [scrapbook]-W0502 # was born about Aug 1840 in Dublin, Ireland. She was christened on 16 Aug 1840 in St Catherine's, Meath Street, Dublin, Ireland. She was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 1, Pelham St, Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was described as Wife, aged 62 years. She was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1911 in 14, West End, Wirksworth, Derbyshire. She was described as Wife, aged 75 years.

The 1911 census records that Mary had 10 children, of which 3 had died.

In a letter sent by Mabel Louisa Bates (see MN/B0425), she describes 'Granny Bates' as being a keen, very keen, member of the Primrose League. This was a  league of both sexes among the Conservatives, founded in 1883. So called because primrose was (erroneously, it is said) taken to be the favorite flower of the Conservative statesman Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield.

They had the following children.

  F i Margaret Mary BATES-B0440 was born on 24 Mar 1859.
F ii Mary Elizabeth BATES-B0404 was born on 08 Jan 1862.
  F iii

She was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in the 26th Infantry Brigade Depot, Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was described as Daughter aged 12 years, a Scholar. She was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 30, Duffield Road, Derby, Derbyshire. She was described as a Domestic Servant, unmarried, aged 23 years and working as a Housemaid.

In the 1911 Census, Susan's mother Mary Anne stated that she had given birth to 10 children of which 3 had died. Two of these were in India but of the other 7 children, evidence has been found for six, of their survival beyond 1911. Susan cannot be found in the 1901 or 1911 Censuses, so it seems likely that she was the third child to die before 1911. However, no death record or marriage record has been found yet.
F vi Alicia BATES-B0405 was born on 10 Mar 1872. She died about Oct 1958.
