John was counted in a census 3 03 Apr 1881 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 4 05 Apr 1891 in Main Street, Middleton, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 5 31 Mar 1901 in 84, Nursery Street, Brightside, Sheffield, Yorkshire.

John Henry and his wife Grace are shown in the Electoral Registers as living at 20, Carrfield Road, Sheffield in 1920 and 1924. However, by 1928 Grace had left (said to have 'run off' with the Coalman). In 1930 John Henry is still at that address but is joined by a Florence Taylor. They were no longer at that address in 1932.

In the 1939 register, John Henry was living at 17, Brickfields in Sheffield and working as a Steam Crane driver. The only other person at that address was an Emma Ward (b. 06 Jun 1875, so a similar age). They were both recorded as 'married'. Curiously, Emma's surname was changed to Mead in the register on the 2nd Apr 1947 (there is a marriage in 1Q1947 in Sheffield between Sarah E Ward and Samuel J Mead). There is a marriage in Wakefield in 3Q1936 between a John H Ward and Sarah Griffiths and one in Doncaster in 4Q1934 between a John Ward and Emma Evans - both places are around 25 miles from Sheffield.

Florence Barton (nee Jackson - J0206) remembers visiting John Henry Ward (her grandfather) in the the early 1950's. He was living with another woman. Florence doesn't remember where it was but thinks it was in the Derby or Sheffield area.

Grace BATES [Parents]-B0403 # was born on 10 Feb 1875 in Fleetwood, Lancashire. Grace married 1 John Henry WARD-W0401 # on 24 Oct 1894 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Grace was counted in a census 2 03 Apr 1881 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 3 05 Apr 1891 in 4, Market Place, Wirksworth. She was counted in a census 4 31 Mar 1901 in 84, Nursery Street, Brightside, Sheffield, Yorkshire.

MISCELLANEOUS:
In a conversation with Florence Barton (JACKSON - J0206) in Feb 2003, I was told that Grace left her husband and 'ran off' with the local Coalyard Owner!! She thinks that Grace had a baby by him but, as an infant, it was crushed by a steam roller during a religious demonstration/march. Such an event must have been reported in the newspapers but with no idea of the date, it would be a long slog to find it.

The Electoral Registers show that Grace was still living with John Henry in 1924 but was not there in 1928. Unfortunately the 1925-27 registers were not available at the time this was researched.

They had the following children.

  F i Florence Emma WARD-W0301 # was born on 06 Feb 1896. She died on 25 Dec 1979.
M ii Richard Henry Victor WARD-W0302 was born on 24 May 1900. He died on 10 Sep 1955.

John was counted in a census 4 30 Mar 1851 in Mill Lane, Langton, Lincolnshire. He was counted in a census 5 08 Apr 1861 in Farm Cottage, Thornton, Lincolnshire. He was counted in a census 6 02 Apr 1871 in 6, Coulsham Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. He was employed as Locomotive Fireman May 1872 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

At the time of the 1871 Census (2 Apr 1871), John Richard WARD was living at 6, Coulsham Street, Lincoln and his future Wife, Sarah Jane LAMB, was living at number 41.

Sarah Jane LAMB [Parents] 1-L0501 # was born 2 in Sep 1851 in Newark, Nottinghamshire. She was baptised 3 on 21 Sep 1851 in Christchurch, Newark, Nottinghamshire. She died 4 on 13 Oct 1937 in 57a, Osmaston Road, Derby, Derbyshire from Syncopi; Bronchitis. Sarah married 5 John Richard WARD-W0501 # on 24 May 1872 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

Sarah was counted in a census 6 08 Apr 1861 in Nettleham, Lincolnshire. She was counted in a census 7 02 Apr 1871 in 41, Coulsham Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire. She was counted in a census 9 05 Apr 1891 in Middleton, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 10 31 Mar 1901 in 21, Freehold Street, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 02 Apr 1911 in 61, Agard Street, Derby, Derbyshire.

Other marriages:
KILLER, William

At the time of the 1871 Census (2 Apr 1871), Sarah Jane LAMB was living at 41, Coulsham Street, Lincoln and her future Husband, John Richard WARD, was living at number 6.

In the 1911 census, Sarah is recorded as having had 11 children in her present marriage, of which 4 died. I have found 9 for this marriage (of which 2 are known to have died) and 2 in her previous marriage. Perhaps they misunderstood the question.

They had the following children.

  M i
William Charles Robert WARD [scrapbook]-W0403 was born 1 about Nov 1872 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. He died 2 on 01 Mar 1893 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire from Accidental death. Hit by machinery at the Killer Bros quarry. He was buried 3 on 05 Mar 1893 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

William was counted in a census 4 03 Apr 1881 in Middleton by Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 5 05 Apr 1891 in Main Street, Middleton, Derbyshire.

William was admitted into Middleton by Wirksworth Infants School on 11 Dec 1876 (his age was recorded as 4yr 10m but I think it should have been 4yr 1m).

After leaving school, William worked as a Labourer at the Sawmill of Messrs' Killer Brothers at Hopton Wood, owned by his Stepfather William Killer. On the 11th of February 1893, William was working a night-shift and around midnight was struck by the connecting rod of the steam engine, which knocked him down and stunned him. He continued to work until his shift ended at 8.30am the next morning, later that day he went to Brassington to play football. He began to complain of a pain in the back of his head and started to have fits, he was attended by Dr Harvey throughout his illness but died at 5pm on the 1st of March.
M ii John Henry WARD-W0401 # was born on 12 Jun 1874. He died after 1950.

Richard Edward BATES [Parents] [scrapbook]-B0503 # was born about Aug 1839 in Dublin, Ireland. He was baptised 1 on 19 Aug 1839 in St Nicholas' (Without), Dublin City, Ireland. He died 2 on 20 Aug 1911 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was buried on 25 Aug 1911 in Wirksworth Cemetery, Derbyshire. Richard married 3 Mary Anne WHELAN-W0502 # on 19 May 1858 in Dublin, Ireland.

Richard was counted in a census 4 02 Apr 1871 in New Military Barracks, Alverstoke, Hampshire. He was counted in a census 5 03 Apr 1881 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 6 05 Apr 1891 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 7 31 Mar 1901 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. He was counted in a census 02 Apr 1911 in 14, West End, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Richard BATES was a Catholic and was born about Aug 1839 in Dublin. Although he was baptised with the middle name of Edward he doesn't seem to have used it during his life - the only other document where it appears is the Wirksworth Cemetery Register. On the 5th January 1861, at the age of 22, he enlisted in the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot at a Dublin Recruiting Office. He originally signed on for 10 years but made a career out of it and completed 30 Years and 15 days by the time he was discharged on the 19th Jan 1891. In his enlistment papers he gave his profession as a Shoemaker.

OCCUPATIONS:

 1 Jul 1875 - ??
 10 May 1876 - Newport, Monmouthshire
 21 Sep 1876 - Cork, Ireland
 1 Dec 1877 - Derby
On the 1 Jul 1881, he transferred to the 2nd Derby Rifle Volunteers.

During his Army Service, he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.

In the 1891 Census, taken almost 3 months after he left the Army, he stated his occupation as a shoemaker, so perhaps he returned to this for a while. By 1901, when he was 64 years old, he stated his occupation as an Army Pensioner.

In 1907, Richard became the Licensee of the The Blacks Head pub in West End, Wirksworth. When he died, his son-in-law John McCreery took over the license.

Mary Anne WHELAN [Parents] [scrapbook]-W0502 # was born about Aug 1840 in Dublin, Ireland. She was baptised on 16 Aug 1840 in St Catherine's, Meath Street, Dublin, Ireland. She died 1 about Aug 1919 in Derby, Derbyshire. Mary married 2 Richard Edward BATES-B0503 # on 19 May 1858 in Dublin, Ireland.

Mary was counted in a census 3 02 Apr 1871 in New Military Barracks, Alverstoke, Hampshire. She was counted in a census 4 03 Apr 1881 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 5 05 Apr 1891 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 6 31 Mar 1901 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 02 Apr 1911 in 14, West End, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

The 1911 census records that Mary had 10 children, of which 3 had died.

In a letter sent by Mabel Louisa Bates (see MN/B0425), she describes 'Granny Bates' as being a keen, very keen, member of the Primrose League. This was a  league of both sexes among the Conservatives, founded in 1883. So called because primrose was (erroneously, it is said) taken to be the favorite flower of the Conservative statesman Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield.

They had the following children.

  F i Margaret Mary BATES-B0440 was born on 24 Mar 1859.
F ii Mary BATES-B0404 was born on 08 Jan 1862.
  F iii

Susan was counted in a census 2 02 Apr 1871 in New Military Barracks, Alverstoke, Hampshire. She was counted in a census 3 03 Apr 1881 in Normanton, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 05 Apr 1891 in 30, Duffield Road, Derby, Derbyshire.

In the 1911 Census, Susan's mother Mary Anne stated that she had given birth to 10 children of which 3 had died. Two of these were in India but of the other 8 children, evidence has been found of their survival beyond 1911, only Susan cannot be found, so it seems probable that she died before 1911. However, no death record or marriage record has been found yet.
F vi Alicia BATES-B0405 was born on 10 Mar 1872.
  F vii Grace BATES-B0403 # was born on 10 Feb 1875.
F viii Jane BATES-B0424 was born on 01 Oct 1877.
M ix Richard Edward BATES-B0407 was born on 08 Sep 1879. He died on 19 Sep 1942.

Mildred EKE-E0304 was born 1 on 28 May 1906 in Rotherham, West Riding Yorkshire. She died 2 about May 1990 in Rotherham, West Riding Yorkshire. Mildred married 3 Richard Henry Victor WARD-W0302 about Aug 1929 in Rotherham (RD), West Riding Yorkshire.

Other marriages:
PEACH, Thomas

Mildred's1939 Register entry was amended on the 27 Jun 1966, changing her surname from Ward to Peach.

They had the following children.

  F i
Aileen WARD-W0203 was born 1 about Aug 1931 in Rotherham, West Riding Yorkshire. She died in ?.

Charles TAYLOR-T0401 was born 1 on 16 Mar 1860 in Derby, Derbyshire. Charles married 2 Mary BATES-B0404 about Nov 1881 in Derby, Derbyshire.

She was counted in a census 05 Apr 1891 in 5, Upper Dale Road, Normanton, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 6 31 Mar 1901 in 9, Dale Street, Derby, Derbyshire. She was counted in a census 02 Apr 1911 in 9, Dale Road, Derby, Derbyshire.

The 1911 census shows that Mary gave birth to 7 children, of which 2 had died.

There is some uncertainty about Mary's date of birth. The 1939 register entry records her dob as 08 Jun 1862, yet she was baptised in Fermoy on the 23 Feb 1862. A date of 08 Jan 1862 has been used but may not be correct. The deaths of Mary and Charles have not yet been found. It's possible that the 1939 register entry is not the correct one but it looked right with his occupation, ages and location.

In October 1914, just weeks after the outbreak of WW1, Charles left his position working for Miss E Arkwright at the Gate House and enlisted as Private 3007 in 1st/6th Reserve Battalion (Notts and Derby Regiment) of The Sherwood Foresters. Probably due to his age, he was not posted overseas until the 11th of June 1916, when he departed Southampton for Rouen. He joined his unit, and The Battles of the Somme, on the 4th of July. He was wounded in action just a month later on the 6th of August and taken to the 20th Casualty Clearing Station in Warlencourt where he died of those wounds the same day.
