James Thurtell HEYS 1-H0536 was born 2 about Nov 1839 in Chedgrave, Norfolk. He died in ?. James married 3, 4 Elizabeth Middleton BLUNDERFIELD-B0526 on 24 Oct 1867 in Holy Trinity, Loddon, Norfolk.

James was counted in a census on 07 Jun 1841 in Chedgrave, Norfolk. He was described as aged 1 year and living in the house of Elizabeth Heys aged 70.. He was counted in a census on 30 Mar 1851 in Bridge Street, Bungay, Suffolk. He was described as scholar at a school for latin, french and music. He was counted in a census on 08 Apr 1861 in Hales Green, Loddon, Norfolk. He was described as a farmer's son, unmarried, aged 21 years. He was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in Mettingham, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 31 years, working as a Farmer of 190 acres, employing 5 men and 2 boys. He was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in High Road, Mettingham, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 41 years, working as a Farmer of 285 acres, employing 10 men and 3 boys. He was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in Beccles Road, Mettingham, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 51 years, working as a Farmer. He was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in Yarmouth Road, Ellingham, Norfolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 61 years, working as a Farm Bailiff and Estate Agent. He was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1911 in 28, Murray Road, Ipswich, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 71 years, a Retired Farmer.

The origins of James is not clear. At birth, he was registered as James HEYS ( Loddon District, Dec quarter of 1839). In the 1841 census, aged only 1 year, he is with 70 years old Elizabeth Heys in Chedgrave. In 1851 he is a scholar at a private boarding school in Bungay and appears to be learning latin, french and music. By 1861 and 21 years old, he is living with James Watson THURTELL (aged 49) and his wife of 1 year (Louisa) Ann (aged 31- nee Abrahams). He is still listed as James HEYS but shown as the son of James Watson THURTELL. Ann is too young to be his mother. James Watson THURTELL is a farmer of 540 acres and employs 30 people and was recorded as unmarried in the 1851 census.

A possible explanation is that James HEYS was the illegitimate child of James Watson THURTELL and an unknown HEYS (perhaps a daughter of Elizabeth Heys) - having the christian name James supports this possibility. Perhaps something happened to the mother and so the child was initially looked after by his maternal grandmother, then sent to boarding school and then went to, perhaps, his only remaining family James Watson THURTELL.

When he married Elizabeth Middleton BLUNDERFIELD in 1867, he gave his name as James Thurtell HEYS.

Their first child was registered in 1868 with the name Rosa Maria Thurtell HEYS.

In the 1871 census, he and his family used the surname THURTELL, however, when the birth of their second child was registered in 1874 the name James Edward Thurtell HEYS was used. Perhaps he thought the Registry Office were more likely to check the names than the census.

James Watson THURTELL died about May 1876.

In May 1880, he is referred to as James Thortle in the codicil of Francis BLUNDERFIELD's will (B0604).

In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census, he and his family used the surname THURTELL.

Interestingly, in the 1881 census, Emily THURTELL is living with them. She is single aged 19 years and shown as James's sister. Probably a daughter of James Watson THURTELL and
