FLORANCE, Sarah Ann

In March 1880, Benjamin Charles Blunderfield, described as a Farmer of Gisleham in Suffolk, filed for Bankruptcy (see Document Archive). This was no doubt the reason for a 'fresh start' in another country.

According to the statement given by Benjamin's son, George Farrow Blunderfield, at the inquest into the Trawool Tragedy, he stated that he had gone to S Africa with his parents when he was 11 and that they lived there for 3 years. This means that they must have left England around 1882 and arrived in Australia around 1885. They initially lived in Plympton, SA.

Whilst his wife and children were living in Southwold at the time of the 1881 census, there is no trace of Benjamin anywhere in England. He had already gone out to South Africa.

On the 3rd of July 1880, the steamer 'Balmoral Castle', arrived in Cape Town, a passenger with the surnmame Blunderfield is listed as bound for Natal and continued to Durban a few days later, probably aboard the steamer 'Venice'.

His wife Mary Anne and their seven surviving children (Henrietta, Francis, George, Jessie, Alice, Beatric and Stephen) left Plymouth on the 13th May 1882 aboard the steamer 'German' and arrived Durban to join Benjamin, almost a month later, on the 12th June.

The family moved to Australia around 1885. Details of their journey have not yet been found.

In the South Australian Police Gazette index for 1895 there is the following entry:
Stealing in Dwellings, etc. Blunderfield, Benjamin C. page 70

There is a Mr B Blunderfield (aged 63) who described himself as a Dealer, departing Southampton on the 18th October 1902 aboard the steamer 'Galeka' bound for Cape Town. This was about a year after his first wife had died in Australia.

He must have returned to Australia though. In the South Australian Police Gazette index for 1904 there is the following entry:
Stealing in Dwellings, etc. Blunderfield, Benjamin C. page 91

Near the Hilton railway-station crossing they found the body of a man badly mutilated. It was cold and was lying under the line in the cattle pit on the south side of the Hilton railway line crossing. The body has been identified as that of Benjamin Charles Blunderfield, a former resident of Halifax Street, Adelaide. An inquest will be held to-day.

Kalgoorlie, January 1. Captain Williams, of the Golden Ridge mine, gave information to the Kalgoorlie police today that a man named Frank Blunderfield on Monday last left Kalgoorlie in company with two mates for the Golden Ridge. They got off the track towards Mount Morgan. Blunderfield's mates reached their camp early on Wednesday morning, but they left Blunderfield behind on the track, about eleven miles out, he being too knocked up to keep up with them. Captain Williams sent out two cyclists, and one of the man's mates followed on foot, but they found that Blunderfield had left the track, and nothing had been seen or heard of him at the Mount Morgan or on Block 42 on the Hampton Plains. Mounted - constable McDonald and a native tracker were accordingly sent out from Kalgoorlie to search for him, and the Bulong police have also entered upon enquiries.

Kalgoorlie, January 3.
The man Blunderfield, who was lost between Kalgoorlie and the Golden Ridge since Monday night, was found by a constable and a black tracker in a very exhausted state in the scrub, about 19 miles south-east of the Golden Ridge mine. He has been attended to by his mates.

On the first of November 1901, Francis Blunderfield was installed as an Officer of the newly opened Mount Morgans Masonic Lodge. Bro. Blunderfield was appointed 'Tyler' (guards the doors of the meeting room).

Francis appears as Frank BLUNDERFIELD in the 1903 Australian Electoral Rolls, for Mount Morgans, Coolgardie, WA in working as a miner. and again in 1913 as Frank in Mt Chalmers, North Rockhampton, Capricornia, QLD along with his brother Charles (Frederick) of 'Hold Up' notoriety.

Several newspaper cuttings have been obtained which describe George's criminal past, the murders at Trawool, as well as the man-hunt, trial and hanging. After escaping from Rottnest Prison, he used the alias George Arthur Oldring and it is interesting to see that in 1881, their neighbours in Southwold had the surname Oldring.

In the 1841 Census, David is not listed with his family, yet his twin brother Jonathon is (aged 9 months). He doesn't appear with any known relatives either, so it seems probable that the enumerator missed him.

The 1911 census records that David and Jane had 6 children born alive, of which 2 died before 1911. This confirms that all of their children have been found.

In the November 1883 Edition of Kelly's Directory, Henry Page Blunderfield is listed as a Farmer.

The 1911 census records that Henry and Anne had 13 children born alive, of which 3 had died before 1911. Therefore, there is another child to be found. Their sons Harry Cross and William Edward had died before 1911. There are no un-attributed entries in the GRO Birth or Death registers or the Sizeland Parish Registers. There was a submitted entry in the old IGI for an Elinor Blunderfield in 1868 but that appears to have been dropped from the new FamilySearch database.
