The same register was used for baptisms and burials at the nearby Heckingham House of Industry (Workhouse), as well as at St Gregory's Church. Between 1778 and 1781, the baptisms of their children appear amongst numerous 'base born' children, presumably from the workhouse.

It seems very unlikely that Thomas and Martha's family were ever in the workhouse, because, when Thomas died in 1815, his Will showed that he owned several properties and made substantial bequests. He also devised lands at Heckingham and Thurlton to his eldest son Francis.

The Blunderfields were a family of some standing in Heckingham and many register entries, emphasise that the baptism or burial was 'at the Church'.

He and and some friends were amongst the first to cross America on the famous Oregon Wagon Trail, with numerous adventures (including encounters with indians) on the way. It's not known if he struck it rich but sometime between 1860 and 1863 he returned to Norfolk, where he married and settled down.
