Joan Mary TARGETT [scrapbook]-T0202 was born 1 about Feb 1919 in Mutford (RD), Suffolk. She died on 22 Sep 1944 in Pitlochry, Scotland from asphyxia by drowning. She was buried 2 after 12 Oct 1944 in Carlton Colville, Suffolk.

Joan was counted in a census on 19 Jun 1921 in 63, London Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. She was described as Daughter, aged 2 years and 3 months.

Joan worked as a 'Lady Cook' at the Leys Public School for Boys in Cambridge. During the War the School and staff were evacuated to the Hydro Hotel in Pitlochry, Scotland. One afternoon, in the Autumn of 1944, Joan went for a cycle ride alone to see the nearby Tummel Falls - where she is believed to have fallen in the river and drowned.

In the extract from the Scottish Register of Deaths (see image in Document Archive), Joan's death was stated as occurring on the 12th October 1944, yet her Gravestone in St Peter's Churchyard, Carlton Colville, Suffolk, shows her death as the 22nd September 1944. Which suggests that she drowned on the 22nd September but was not found until the 12th October (20 days later). Her body was found at Stoke Lodge, Walnut Grove, in Perth.

There was an entry made in the Register of Corrected Entries (Volume 1 Page 73 on the 1st November 1944) (see image in scrapbook), this was presumably as a result of the inquest that must have taken place during the last two weeks of October 1944. The extract states that her usual residence was:

Leys School
Athol Palace Hotel
Pitlochry

In 2008, at Perth Records Office, I searched the Newspapers for the area (both Perth and Pitlochry) for the period 22nd September to the end of November 1944. Surprisingly, there was no report about the finding of the body or the inquest. The newspapers were of course full of morale boosting reports on the war, perhaps the reporting of such a depressing event such as was suppressed, particularly if they thought it was suicide.

Constance Bougard (nee Rackham), told me in 1990, that there was a feeling in family that it may have been suicide but no reason was given.

George YATES-Y0501 died 1 before 1881. George married 2 Mary Ann WALKDEN-W0503 # about Aug 1873 in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Mary Ann married George Yates in 1873, so it seems possible, perhaps probable, he was the father of George and Susanna.

It is unlikely that a father's name would be stated on his birth certificate (Susanna's didn't) but may be there is on his marriage certificate, since his mother had re-married by then.

It would be interesting to study George Yates's past - where was he in 1861 and 1871? was he married to someone else up until 1873?

Mary Ann WALKDEN [Parents]-W0503 # was born about 1824 in Blackburn, Lancashire. She died after 1891. Mary married 1 George YATES-Y0501 about Aug 1873 in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Mary was counted in a census on 30 Mar 1851 in 4, Gerrard Fold, Blakey Moor, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Wife aged 25 years. She was counted in a census on 08 Apr 1861 in 2, Sowers Court, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Head of family, Widow, aged 35 years, working as a Washer Woman. She was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in 2, Sowers Court, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Head of family, Widow, aged 48 years, working as a Charwoman. She was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in 100, Oxford Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Mother-in-Law, widow, aged 52 years, working as a Charwoman. She was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 100, Oxford Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Widow aged 63 years. Boarder. Actually the Mother in Law of the Head of Household.

Other marriages:
SERGEANT, William

They had the following children.

  M i George SERGEANT-S0402 was born on 22 Apr 1862.
  F ii
Susanna SERGEANT-S0403 was born on 08 May 1868 in Blackburn, Lancashire. She was christened on 17 May 1868 in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn, Lancashire. She died about Aug 1952 in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Susanna was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in 2, Sowers Court, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Daughter aged 3 years, a Scholar. She was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in 100, Oxford Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Lodger, aged 12 years, a Scholar. She was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 'The Unicorn Hotel', 66 Mount Pleasant Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Servant, unmarried, aged 23 years, working as a General Domestic Servant. She was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 69, Haslingden Road, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Servant, unmarried, aged 32 years, working as a Domestic Housekeeper in a Public House. She was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1911 in 23, Queens Road, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Unmarried, aged 39 years, working as a Heald Knitter. When the National Register was compiled on the 29th of September 1939, She was living at 24, Ingham Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. She was described as Single and a Retired Heald Knitter. Date of birth was recorded as 08 May 1868.

Since William Sergeant died  in 1859, he cannot be the father of Susanna. The Birth Certificate was obtained to try and discover who the father was. Susanna was born on the 8th May 1868 at home in Sowers Court, Blackburn. This was 9 years after the husband of Mary Ann had died. The father's name is not stated on the Certificate but it seems probable that George Yates was the father as he subsequently married Mary Ann. The Birth Certificate can be seen in the document archive under S0403.

She never married.

Unusually, in the 1939 Register, her name is crossed out and there is a note saying 'Identity Card Cancelled'.
