He was posted to the 265th Protection Company of the Royal Defence Corps and assigned the regimental number 40856 (the RDC was a full-time territorial unit largely comprised of older men or those who were perhaps unfit to serve overseas. Their duties were to guard important areas such as bridges, tunnels, railways and of course ports such as Gravesend). Within 2 weeks he was promoted to Sergeant, presumably because he had some military training and experience - his records show that he was reservist from the 1st Kent Volunteer Artillery, a 'part-time' Corps formed after a public meeting in 1859 because of the threat of invasion by the French. He was demobilised on the 15th February 1919 at Gravesend.

His home address  throughout this period was 22, Pepper Croft Street, Gravesend. His wife's name is given as Annie Elizabeth Blunderfield and his occupation was stated as a Blacksmith.

Marriage Notes:

On the original  marriage certificate in the St Olave  Parish Register, Robert's father is stated as Robert Joseph Blunderfield, a Carpenter. I am sure this is a mistake. The oocupation is correct. It's unlikely that the local registrar's copy or the GRO copy would be any different as they would have been transcribed from the church certificate..

A Bankruptcy Notice in 1864 gives his occupation as a Cheesemonger. A newspaper article in 1867 reports him as the Verger at his local church (although this was probably unpaid and part time). In 1871, he is working as an Estate Agent. In 1881 as a Clerk with the London Steamboat Company and finally in 1891, the Census describes him as a Commercial Traveller in Soap.

His work with the London Steamship Company may have allowed him to travel. There is a Thomas Blunderfield arriving in Sydney on the 2nd June 1882, aboard the 'Egmont' from Rockhampton. He was travelling in Saloon Class rather than Steerage.
