Blunderfield, Jabez Richard milliner, draper and grocer, Common place, Little Walsingham.

About 14 years after the death of Catherine, his first wife, Jabez married Kate Johnson in 1897. Kate was recorded as an assistant in his shop at the time of the 1891 census.

Thomas Rust BLUNDERFIELD-B04GM was born on 29 Apr 1862 in Norwich, Norfolk. He died on 02 Jul 1862 in Norwich, Norfolk from Diarrhea. He was buried 1 in Earlham Cemetery, Norwich, Norfolk.

There is some mystery regarding the father's identity.
The birth was registered on the 1st May 1862 by the father Thomas Blunderfield, a Hawker of Earthenware, of Stepping Lane, St Peter per Mountergate, Norwich. The death was registered on the 5th July 1862 by a Mary Moore, who was present at the death in Brocks Buildings, Oak Street, Norwich. Mary, who it is thought was a lodging house keeper, gave the father's name as Thomas Rust Blunderfield. When the child was buried at Earlham Cemetery in Norwich, the father's name was again stated as Thomas Rust Blunderfield.

The mother, Catherine Steven’s, married Jabez Richard Blunderfield on 26th May 1862 at St Peter per Mountergate, Norwich. They married by Licence issued on the 19th May (quicker and more private than banns which would have had to be read in the grooms parish - probably in Norwich rather than his family's parish of Loddon). There were four witnesses all with the surname Stevens (her brothers and sisters);  no Blunderfield witness. Was it a secret wedding? Was it announced in the newspaper?

Other than the child, there are no Thomas Rust Blunderfields in the GRO registers (B,M or D). He cannot be found in any of the Census years, particularly Norwich in 1861 and 1871. Admittedly, a hawker may not have had a fixed abode and perhaps would avoid official records whenever possible. There is only one Thomas Blunderfield currently on the family tree who is 'unaccounted for' - B0652, but he was born in 1811 and, if still living, was probably in London like the rest of his family by 1861.

There are a number of possible explanations:

Jabez, whilst in Norwich,  may have been using the alias Thomas in preference to Jabez. If this was the case, why falsify the occupation and marital status of Catherine on the birth certificate.

Jabez, working as a 22 year old drapers assistant in Norwich gets Catherine pregnant. Jabez, who is from a respectable church going family, would probably have not told his parents, so when the child is born, Jabez registers the birth under a false name (the Hawker Thomas) and says that Catherine was married. When it appears that the child will survive, Jabez does the right thing by Catherine and marries her, perhaps in secret, 4 weeks later. When the child died on the 2nd July 1862, although now married, they have to give the father’s name as Thomas to be consistent with the birth certificate - although this means that Mary Moore, the informant, was told of the deception.

There may actually be a Thomas Rust Blunderfield, hawker of earthenware, who got Catherine pregnant but then disappeared soon after he registered the birth. Jabez steps in and marries Catherine – even though people would assume the child was his. In this case the father’s name and occupation are stated truly on the certificates but that Catherine was married is again untrue.

I can’t help feeling that the Rust middle name must have some significance.

It would be interesting to see if they had the child baptised – there was enough time. Would they be more truthful to the church?

The order of names given by his parents in the birth registration, 1871 census and death registration (in 1872) was George Thomas, however, the baptism register records the name as Thomas George - which must be a clerical.

Both the GRO Birth and Death Indexes list him has Henry Charles but the baptism entry in the parish register shows him as Charles Henry.

Jonathan BLUNDERFIELD [Parents] 1-B0525 was born 2 on 11 Sep 1840 in Hales Hall, Loddon, Norfolk. He was christened 3 on 18 Oct 1840 in the Wesleyan Chapel in Bungay, Suffolk. He died 4 on 08 Mar 1910 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. He was buried 5 on 14 Mar 1910 in Kirkley Cemetery, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Jonathan married 6, 7 Susannah Sophia REYNOLDS-R0557 on 13 Sep 1864 in Seething, Norfolk.

Jonathan was counted in a census on 07 Jun 1841 in Hales Hall Farm, Loddon, Norfolk. He was described as aged 9 months. He was counted in a census on 30 Mar 1851 in Magdalen St, Pawseys Yard, Norwich St Saviour, Norfolk. He was described as Scholar, aged 10 years, boarding in Norwich. He was counted in a census on 08 Apr 1861 in Pawseys Yard, Norwich St Saviour, Norfolk. He was described as Boarder, unmarried, aged 20 years, working as a Carpenter and Builder. He was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in Station Road, Beccles, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 30 years, working as a Master Builder and Carpenter, employing 3 men. He was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in Bridewell Street, Wymondham, Norfolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 41 years, working as a Master Carpenter. He was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 160, Denmark Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 50 years, working as a Builder and Contractor. He was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 160, Denmark Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. He was described as Head of family, married, aged 60 years, working as a Builder and Contractor (Employer).

It seems that Jonathan had a little industrial unrest from his workers as this extract from the Beccles & Bungay Weekly News dated 19 September 1865 (Page 4, column 1) shows:
Builders Strike The dissatisfaction at the present rate of wages which has been manifested at Yarmouth and other neighbouring places has now shewn itself here. We understand that delegates from the amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners have been sowing the seeds of discontent among our artisans, and the result has been that on Monday, the 11th September, a paper without a signature or date was shown to Mr PELLS, Mr WOODROFFE, and Mr BLUNDERFIELD, calling upon them to advance the rate of wages from 18 Shillings to 20 Shillings per week, and to reduce the hours of labour to 4 o'clock on Saturdays instead of 5 o'clock as heretofore. No reply to this demand having been given by the masters, in consequence of the paper being, as already stated, neither signed nor dated, on Friday morning the same builders received each a copy of the following: -

Sir,
Not having a satisfactory answer to our notice, we hereby one and all agree not to work in your employment after Saturday the 16th September. J. GOFFIN E. HINDES F. CHAPLIN J. SPATCHETT J. LOCKWOOD J. PRIME J. GOFFIN G. BLOCK J. BARBER J. CLARKE S. LARKE F. LARKE W. WOOLNOUGH H. THROWER G. GRAY

On Saturday evening the master builders named above offered the men the advance of two shillings per week after the 23rd September, provided they work the same hours as heretofore. On Monday morning they resumed their employment.

By July 1874, Jonathan appears to try his hand at running an Inn. He sells his building stock and furniture and takes over the Tunns Inn at Yoxford, Suffolk. Unfortunately things do not seem to work out and he is auctioning off the contents of the Inn as well as the coaching horses and carriages, which sounds as if he was closing the business. By early 1876, there are a number of creditors meetings being held - Jonathan presumably having gone bankrupt.

By 1881, he has moved to Wymondham in Norfolk and returned to carpentry and building work..

Susannah Sophia REYNOLDS-R0557 was born about May 1839 in Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk. She was christened on 13 Jun 1839 in St Mary's Church, Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk. She died 1 in Nov 1909 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. She was buried 2 on 29 Nov 1909 in Kirkley Cemetery, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Susannah married 3, 4 Jonathan BLUNDERFIELD-B0525 on 13 Sep 1864 in Seething, Norfolk.

Susannah was counted in a census on 06 Jun 1841 in St Faith's Road, Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk. She was described as aged 2 years. She was counted in a census on 30 Mar 1851 in Aylesham Road, Hellesdon, Norwich, Norfolk. She was described as Daughter aged 11 years, a Scholar. She was counted in a census on 02 Apr 1871 in Station Road, Beccles, Suffolk. She was described as a Builder's Wife aged 31 years. She was counted in a census on 03 Apr 1881 in Bridewell Street, Wymondham, Norfolk. She was described as Wife aged 40 years. She was counted in a census on 05 Apr 1891 in 160, Denmark Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. She was described as Wife aged 50 years. She was counted in a census on 31 Mar 1901 in 160, Denmark Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk. She was described as Wife aged 61 years.

The order of her forenames varied during her lifetime.
It appears that the birth wasn't registered but she was baptised on the 13 Jun 1839 with the names Susanna Sophia. The 1841 and 1851 Censuses record her as Sophia but when she married in 1864 she signed the register as Susannah Sophia and was still using that order when the 1871 Census was taken. However, by the time of the 1881 census she had begun to use Sophia as her first name and this continued. The registraion of her death is in the form Sophia Susannah.
